Ceropegia lawii Hook. f.

Diese Art, die in Maharashtra, Indien endemisch verbreitet ist, wurde 1883 beschrieben und galt hernach als ausgestorben bis sie 1970 im Harishchandragad-Hügel-Fort im Ahmednagar-Distrikt wiederentdeckt wurde.

Die Pflanze hat eine unterirdische Knolle, mit einer Größe von ca. 2 bis 4 cm im Durchmesser.

Der kaum behaarte Trieb ist gewöhnlich sehr stark verzweigt und 30 bis 90 cm hoch.

Die Blätter haben einen ca. 1,7 cm langen, behaarten Stiel, der oberseits tief eingeschnitten ist, sie sind oval, länglich oval oder lanzettförmig, bis zu 10,5 cm lang und 4,5 cm breit, glänzend dunkelgrün oberseits, heller graugrün unterseits, die Blattbasis ist gerundet oder herzförmig, die Blattspitze ist stumpf ausgezogen.

Die Blüten erscheinen in wenigblütigen Cymen in den Blattachseln am oberen Teil des Triebes, sie sind ca. 2,8 cm lang und ähneln denen verwandter Arten, wie Ceropegia panchganiensis Blatt. & McCann oder Ceropegia sahyadrica Ansari & Kulk., sind aber sehr variabel, vor allem in der Färbung. Die Populationen aus dem Ahmednagar-Distrikt haben blass olivgrüne Petalen, die Populationen aus Anjaneri im Nasik-Distrikt und aus Dhakeshwar im Pune-Distrikt haben kräftig purpurn gefärbte Petalen, die aus Murbad im Thane-Distrikt wiederum haben gelbe Petalen. Eine dieser Farbmorphen wurde 2013 als eigenständige Art, Ceropegia maharashtrensis Punekar, Tamhankar, Lakshmin., Kumaran, Raut & S. K. Srivast., beschrieben. Sie kommt in Harishchandragad, einem Hügel-Fort im Ahmednagar-Distrikt sowie im Dhak-Fort im Junnar-Taluka, einem Teil des Pune-Distrikts in Maharashtra, Indien vor, wo sie in Höhen von etwa 1200 bis 1400 m zusammen mit der Indischen Wolfsmilch (Euphorbia neriifolia L.) entlang der Ufer von saisonalen Flüssen oder in den Felsspalten der Hügel wächst. Sie wurde später wieder als Synonym geführt. [2]

Die einheimischen Namen der Art sind Kharpudi bzw. Pivli kharchudi (beides in Marathi).

Ceropegia lawii Hook. f.

This species, which is endemic to the state of Maharashtra, India, was described in 1883 and was subsequently thought to be extinct, until it was rediscovered in 1970 at the Harishchandragad hill fort in the Ahmednagar District.

The plant has a subterranean storage tuber, which has a size of about 2 to 4 cm in diameter.

The sparingly haired stem is usually very much branched and 30 to 90 cm tall.

The leaves have a about 1,7 cm long, hairy petiole, that is deeply channeled above, they are ovate, ovate-oblong or ovate-lanceolate, up to 10,5 cm long and 4,5 cm wide, glossy dark green on the upper surface, light greyish green underneath, the leaf base is rounded or heart-shaped, the leaf tip is bluntly tapering.

The flowers appear in few-flowered cymes in the leaf axils at the upper parts of the stem, they are about 2,8 cm long and resemble those of related species, such as Ceropegia panchganiensis Blatt. & McCann or Ceropegia sahyadrica Ansari & Kulk., yet are very variable, especially in the coloration. The populations from the Ahmednagar District have pale olive-green flower petals, the populations from Anjaneri in the Nasik District and from Dhakeshwar in the Pune District have deep purple flower petals, those from Murbad in the Thane District have yellow flower petals. One of these color morphs was described in 2013 as a distinct species, Ceropegia maharashtrensis Punekar, Tamhankar, Lakshmin., Kumaran, Raut & S. K. Srivast.. It occurs in Harishchandragad, a hill fort in the Ahmednagar District, as well as in the Dhak fort in the Junnar Taluka, a part of the Pune District in Maharashtra, India, where it grows at elevations of 1200 to 1400 together with the Indian Spurge (Euphorbia neriifolia L.) along the banks of seasonal streams or in the rocky crevices of the hill slopes. It has later been relegated to synonym status. [2]

Most, if not all species of the genus Ceropegia contain larger or smaller amounts of the alkaloid Ceropegin, and thus are probably not specifically taken by mammals as food, however, giraffes have been observed in the Niger to occasionally eat shoots of Ceropegia aristolochioides. [5]

On the other hand, however, several species of Ceropegia are very important food plants for the caterpillars of some butterfly species from the Brush-footed Butterfly family (Nymphalidae).

The caterpillars of the African Monarch (Danaus chrysippus L.), a species that is distributed over Africa and parts of Asia, are known to feed on several species of Ceropegia in Africa, and at least on Ceropegia bulbosa in India. [2]

The same species was formerly a straggler to the Canary Islands but is now a resident, its larvae were recorded on the islands first on the introduced asclepioid species Orbea variegata (L.) Haw. in 2010. [7]

This species is now known to feed on the endemic Ceropegia species as well (see photograph, which, by the way, was taken in 2008 (!)).
